FAQ
FAQ
What size solar controller do I need for this panel?
On it's own, this panel needs a minimum 10A solar controller with an input voltage greater than the Open Circuit Voltage (24V). The RedArc BCDC 25A is more than adequate if you are looking for a combined DCDC option, otherwise the Victron 75/10 (if installing in a waterproof area), or the EP Ever Tracer (if wanting a portable, waterproof option).
Why am I not seeing the full wattage from my panel?
The wattage on solar panels is measured in lab conditions on a light table which produces 1000 watts/m2 at 25oC. The amount of power produced by your solar panel in real-life conditions will be dependent on the amount of solar radiation being received by the panel at any given time, and the temperature.
You can check your location's solar radiation values online on a number of websites, one example is over here. In general terms, the amount of solar radiation you are receiving at any given time (as a ratio) is an approximation of how much power you should be receiving from your panel. For example, if the radiation is 750 watts/m2 (which is 3/4 of the light table at 1000watts/m2), then you should be receiving approximately 75W out of a 100W panel (3/4 x 100W) at that particular time of the day (assuming your angle to the sun is correct and enivornmental conditions are optimal, ie. there is no shade/cloud, no smoke/haze/pollution etc).
In addition to this, all Solar Panels will de-rate at higher temperatures. A panel with the same solar radiation sitting at 25oC will outperform a panel in 35oC.
